Football is like a religion in Newcastle and they enjoy it almost as much as they enjoy a glass of Brown Ale. Newcastle United did fantastically well to finish fifth in this year’s Premier League, and now they have a great batch of talented young players coming through to help push them on further. One of the notable players this year was Dutch goalkeeper Tim Krul, who had a magnificent season in goal and established himself as one of the Premierships best keepers.
Elsewhere, midfielder Haris Vučkić is rated as one of the top prospects in the country and has enjoyed a loan spell at Cardiff City this season playing five times and scoring one goal.
One name that will look familiar to Toon Army fans is Sammy Ameobi, who is the brother of club legend Shola Ameobi. Like his brother Sammy is a striker who has a long time connection to the club having progressed up through the youth team.
Midfielder Dan Gosling been bubbling under for a couple of years now, having begun his career at Plymouth before joining Everton and then Newcastle. Gosling has been tipped for full England honours one day and while he had an injury-hit 2011/2012, he is hoping to play a larger role next campaign.
Finally, the last Newcastle player to keep an eye on is Romain Amalfitano, a French attacking midfielder signed from Reims. Amalfitano is a skilful player who has yet to make his debut for the club, but he will be looking to make an explosive impact next year.
Away from sports, there have been a fair few thespians come from the North East. One to watch out for is Charlie Hunnam who started off on Byker Grove, and has since appeared in numerous films including Green Street and TV programmes like Undeclared and Young Americans.

A name that might be familiar to most is Chelsea Halfpenny, whose auntie Jill Halfpenny famously appeared on Eastenders and Strictly Come Dancing. It would seem Chelsea has followed the family footsteps and is now a regular on Emmerdale.
One man who is enjoying a rapid rise is Ben Uttley, who was the star of programs such as Spooks and Hollyoaks and has since crossed the pond to appear in Captain America last year.
Many great bands have come out of Newcastle over the years and it remains a hub of original music. It has changed somewhat though, with one of the best new acts being Riton, a DJ who has built up a big following by playing electronic dance.
A band making a splash at the moment are indie outfit The Little Comets, who have built up a decent support and look set to be the next big thing on the Indie scene.
