Michael Schumacher is a German Formula 1 racing driver currently driving for the Mercedes GP team. However, he is most famously known for his eleven year stint with Ferrari, where he won five of his seven world championship titles. In comparison to F1 legends like Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Juan Manuel Fangio, Gilles Villeneueve and others, Schumacher is regarded as the most successful F1 driver of all time, if not the greatest.
Michael Schumacher; a record breaker
Schumacher has broken and holds many F1 records, notably for most titles, race wins, fastest laps, pole positions, total points scored and most races won in a single racing season. According to the official Formula One website (www.f1.com), he is “statistically the greatest f1 driver of all time”.
Schumacher is a racer at heart. He started his racing at a tender age of six when his father took him to a Karting track in Kerpen-Horrem, Germany. There he became the youngest member of the Karting club. From Karting, Schumacher proceeded towards Formula Konig and Formula Three, winning the driver’s championships in both series respectively.
After winning the Macau Grand Prix at the end of 1990, he joined the Mercedes junior racing program in the World Sports Prototype Championship along with fellow German driver, Heinz-Herald Frentzen.
Schumacher debut in Formula 1 came at the 1991 Belgium GP, when Jordan F1’s team owner, Eddie Jordan put him in the seat of the Jordan car.
Schumacher performed exceptionally well, qualifying his car in seventh position at the treacherous Spa track only to retire on the very first lap of the race with clutch problems.
He had done enough to impress and was signed up by Benetton for the following season of 1992. Schumacher won consecutive championships with Benetton in 1994 and 1995 and then moved to joining Ferrari in 1996, where he would win five more titles.
Schumacher retired from Formula One at the end of 2006,while staying on an advisory role for the team. He later decided to return to the sport by signing a 3 year contract to drive for the Mercedes GP team. Schumacher’s career has been filled with major controversies, with twice being involved in championship deciding situations in 1994 (with Damon Hill) and 1997 (with Jacques Villeneuve).
He has also been actively involved in various humanitarian efforts throughout his career and has reportedly donated millions of dollars to charity.
