Matthew Robert Smith, or known as Matt Smith in the entertainment industry, is a Television and stage actor from England. He is most famously known for his role as “The Doctor” in the hit TV series Doctor Who.
From a very young age, Matt wanted to be a professional footballer, but unfortunately due to a back injury, he was forced to quit that dream. Later on, Matt Smith started studying Drama and creative writing to pursue a career in acting.
Matt Smith performed his first professional theatre play in 2003 when he performed in plays like Fresh Kills, The History Boys, On the Shore of the Wide World and Murder in the Cathedral.
However, his first major appearance as an established actor came in the 2007 BBC series called Party Animals.
Matt Smith’s breakthrough opportunity arrived in 2009 when he was selected to play as the eleventh incarnation of ‘The Doctor’ in the hit BBC show called Doctor Who. He was announced as the new doctor replacing David Tennant who was arguably considered the best doctor of all time.
Matt Smith, at the announcement of his role in Doctor Who, was the youngest person ever to play the character in the show. Some fans of the show doubted his credibility and thought that he was inexperienced for the role.
However, Matt Smith quickly proved his own unique style and acting finesse and is now currently doing a great job. For his performance in his first year, he was nominated for Outstanding Drama Performance Category of the National Television Awards.
Owing to his exceptional performance, the BBC officially announced in mid 2011 that Matt Smith had been signed for his third series as ‘The Doctor’.
