Famous Singers from New York

New York City is the largest city of the United States in terms of population, and the centre of the United States’ financial world. It houses the financial district and Wall Street, from where the economy of the States and the World is run. It is also home to the New York Stock Exchange, the largest stock exchange in the world.

Apart from that, the city is also the political capital of the world, and houses the United Nations General Assembly. It is made up of five popular boroughs, and is home to some of the most well known places in the world, including Times Square, downtown Manhattan and Central Park. New York is considered as a hub of art, culture and diversity and has produced some of the finest singers alive. Some of the distinguished ones are as under;

Christina AguileraChristina Aguilera

Christina Aguilera stormed onto the music scene when she won the Star Search television programme back in 1990 and from there on, her journey has only gone upwards. After recording the theme song for the animated picture “Mulan” in 1998, she signed with RCA records. Her first album was released in 1999 titled “Christina Aguilera”, and was a commercial success with three singles on the Billboard Hot 100. The album made her an international star and household name.

Since then, she has released five more albums and is currently working on her 7th studio album to be released in November 2012. Aguilera has sold more than 50 million records worldwide, making her one of the biggest stars in the music business and the second highest selling artist of the 2000’s behind Madonna. She has four Grammy Awards and one Latin Grammy Award, and currently serves as one of the judges of the reality television show “The Voice”.

Ron DanteRon Dante

Born in 1945 in Staten Island New York, Dante is an accomplished singer, songwriter and music producer of the 60’s and 70’s. He was the lead singer of the 60’s band “The Archies” as well as “The Cuff Links” and these are the names which can take you directly into the world of serene nostalgia.

He released his first solo studio album in 1970 called “Ron Dante brings you up”, and his second solo album was released in 1981 called “Street Angel”. Dante is also a record producer and was the producer for Barry Manilow from 1973 to 1981. He recently made a high profile appearance with the CBS Orchestra on the Late Show with David Letterman in 2010.

Lady GagaLady Gaga

Stefani Joanne Angelina aka Lady Gaga is one of the most famous and successful female singers and song writers of the current era. The woman is a brand in herself and her strange yet charming attires are something that have become worldwide sensation.

Her early life was not a bed of roses, but it was her undying will to succeed which has eventually taken her to the heights of fame, which only a very few can experience. After dropping out of New York University to pursue a career in music, she was noticed by rapper Akon, who signed her to his label. She released her first studio album titled “The Fame” in 2008, and was immediately catapulted to the status of an icon and international celebrity.

The album topped charts around the world and produced some of the biggest hits of that year. She has since released two more studio albums and her “Monster Ball Tour” is one of the highest grossing concert tours of all time. Gaga is one of the best selling music artists of the current music industry and one of the richest and most influential celebrities in the world. She is a five time Grammy winner and 13 time MTV Video Music Awards winner.

Art Garfunkel

The man completely glorifies his first name to say the least. Art Garfunkel is a singer, poet and a songwriter, most famous for being one half of the folk duo Simon and Garfunkel. The group split in 1970, after which Garfunkel started his solo career that included a number of top 10 and top 20 hits.

He is a six time Grammy award winner and was enrolled in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with his partner Paul Simon in 1990. He is also a lifetime achievement award holder for his contribution to folk music.

Bridget Kelly

A pop/R&B singer and songwriter born in New York, Bridget Kelly is currently signed to Roc Nation and released her first single “thinking about forever” in August, 2011. Some of the biggest producers in the R&B/Rap music business are said to have worked on her upcoming debut album under the Roc Nation banner.

She released a single Special Delivery in August 2012 in anticipation of her debut album. Kelly has performed with legendary rapper Jay Z at numerous concerts and music festivals to take the place of Alicia Keys and perform her part in Jay Z’s hit single “Empire State of Mind”.
