Famous People from Casablanca

Casablanca in Morocco is most famous for the Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman film of the same name, however, it is in itself a beautiful and culturally rich area, which has produced a number of successful and influential people over the years.

Here is a look at the latestbatch of Casablanca locals that look set to be future successes in their respective industries.

Somewhat ironically for a city that shares its name with one of the most famous films of all time, Casablanca has produced a number of noteworthy actors.The first name to keep an eye on is actress Morjana Alaoui who relocated to America and has carved out a career by appearing in films such as Martyrs and Special Forces.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

It must run in the family as Alaoui’s cousin Laïla Marrakchi is also an actress and appeared in the popular Moroccan film Marock.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Another actress breaking through the Hollywood scene is Zineb Oukach, who appeared in the 2007 Gavin Hood film Rendition and has also worked as a model.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Actor-comedian Gad Elmale is a huge star in Morocco and Canada and is starting to make his breakthrough in English language films. After appearing in movies such as Coco, Hors de Prix and Midnight in Paris, he has since appeared in mainstream films such as Jack and Jill and The Dictator.

 

 

 

 

 

On theother side of the camera SwelNoury is gaining reputation in his home country as a writer and director and has had success with local films Heaven’s Door and The Man Who Sold the World.

Casablanca has also produced a number of musicians, one of whom is Amine, a very popular R&B singer from the region who has had some massive hits such asSobri,  Ma Vie and My Girl.

Another is Dounia Batma, who made her break through on the TVprogramme Arab Idol, where she lost in the final. Since then she has gone on to sign for PlatinumRecords and is expected to become a huge star in the future.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Another boundary breaking performer from Casablanca is the rapper Bigg. Named after The Notorious B.I.G, the Casablanca rapper is considered one of the pioneers of Moroccan rap and is known for his aggressive style and socially conscious themes.

There haven’t been too many great sportsmen and women to come out of Morocco but there are a couple of exciting prospects bubbling under. One of which is Moroccan-Danish midfielder Ayoub Sørensen, an eye catching left winger that plays for Lyngby in Sweden. He is known by the nickname Nani after his hero the Man Utd winger and he bares more than a striking resemblance to him as well.

Another player iscentrebackIssam El Adoua, who is a full Moroccan international and plays his club football at Vitoria S.C.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Finally, boxer Abdelali Daraa competed at the London 2012 Olympics as a light flyweight, but unfortunately lost in the first round to Thomas Essomba, but is tipped to come back for Rio and do significantly better.
