Famous Actors and Actresses from New York City

New York City, besides being the cultural and financial capital of United States, is also home to some of the finest actors that have entered the acting scene.

New York is the home of Broadway and theatre is one of the many attractions of the city, leading to its tendency of producing many actors and actresses over the past century. Although the film capital of America is Los Angeles, and New York is more well known for its music scene, many actors that eventually made it to Hollywood started their lives and careers in the most famous city of the world.

Penn Badgley

Most famous for his character “Dan Humphrey” on the hit television series “Gossip Girl”, Badgley is an American film and television actor who calls New York City home. Although Badgley has been on the acting scene since 1999 – when he made on appearance on the hit television comedy “Will & Grace” – the actor got his big break when he was starred as one of the leading cast members in “Gossip Girl”. The show went on to become a worldwide success and Badgley won popularity around the world for his character.

Badgley has since been involved in a number of motion picture projects, including John Tucker Must Die, Easy A and Margin Call. His talent and ability to adapt to various roles continue amaze.

Eddie Cahill

Cahill played the role of goalie Jim Craig in the 2004 ice hockey movie, “Miracle” and then shot to fame by playing the character of Detective Don Flack on the successful television drama CSI:NY.Having started his acting career on the New York theatre scene, Cahill got the attention of film and television producers after he performed in the off-Broadway production of “The Altruists”.

He has made quite a few television appearances, including a recurring guest role in the hit television comedy “Friends”.

Christian Camargo

Best known for the role of Brian Moser in the hit American television drama “Dexter”, Camargo is a regular performer on the New York theatre scene, from where he started his acting career. He performed in the 2009 production of Hamlet, as well as the February 2010 production of “The Tempest”.

Besides theatre and television, Camargo has a list of supporting film roles to his credit as well, the most famous of which are his appearances in the films “National Treasure: Book of Secrets”, “The Hurt Locker” and “The Mentalist”. As of 2011, he has also become a part of the hit film franchise, “The Twilight Saga”.

Francis Capra

At only 29 years of age, Capra has a long list of television and film projects already under his belt.

The star began his acting career early and by the time he was nine, Capri was involved in the film, “A Bronx Tale”. He then played a character on the hit television show, “Veronica Mars”. His recent projects include roles in the television series “Criminal Minds” and “Friday Night Lights”, as well as a film appearance in “Crank”.

Capra has also ventured into production and owns a production company called Take Off Productions.

Nestor Carbonell

A veteran actor who became famous for portraying the role of ‘Mayor of Gotham City’ in the hit film “The Dark Knight” and “The Dark Knight Rises”, Carbonell appeared on a number of television series including “Scrubs”, “House” and “Daybreak”.

He became well known after appearing in the hit television series “Lost” for seven episodes in the third season of the series. As of 2011, he has been starring on the CW series “Ringer” as an FBI agent.

Claire Danes

At a young age of 33, Danes is already an award winning actress. An accomplished actress, especially on the small screen, Danes started her career in 1995 through the television drama series MY So-Called Life. She won a golden globe award and received an Emmy nomination for her performance in that show, even though it was cancelled after only 19 episodes.

After the series, Danes shifted towards films and over the next decade, would involve herself in many critically acclaimed films including “The Rainmaker”, “U Turn”, “Terminator 3” and more recently, “As Cool As I Am”.

In 2010, she returned to television to perform in the HBO production of “Temple Grandin”, and won the 2010 Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a mini-movie, as well as the 2011 Golden Globe award for ‘Best Actress in a miniseries or television film’.

Since 2011, she has been starring in the television series “Homeland”, and won the 2012 Golden Globe as well as Emmy award for best actress in a television series for her performance in the show.

Rosario Dawson

After getting her first break in 1995 in the film “Kids”, Dawson has been very active on the film circuit and has many blockbusters to her name.

Till 2012, she has appeared in 47 films, including the blockbusters “Seven Pounds”, “Eagle Eye”, “Death Proof”, “Sin City” and “The Run Down”.

Peter Facinelli

A veteran actor of film and television, Peter started his career in 1995 when he appeared in the feature film, “Angela”. In 2002, he got a leading role in the Fox drama series “Fastlane”.

Peter’s fortunes changed when he was given the roles of Carlisle Cullen in the Twilight series. The series became a worldwide sensation and Facinelli was introduced to the world. He has since appeared in all parts of the series, and is currently playing the role of a doctor in the television series “Nurse Jackie”.

Diane Lane

An accomplished actress having Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations under her belt, Diane Lane is a showbiz veteran who started acting at the age of 13 in the 1979 film “A little romance”. Since then, she has done numerous film projects, including the lead role in the 2000 critically acclaimed film “The Perfect Storm”.

In 2002, she gave her most memorable performance to date in the film “Unfaithful”, for which she earned an Academy Award, Golden Globe as well as Screen Actors Guild Award nomination.
