Over four million people live in Melbourne, the capital of the Australian state of Victoria.
With so many residents it is unsurprising that the city has produced influential people across many walks of life, and there are more than a few rising stars from what is often referred to as ‘the cultural capital of Australia.’
After seven years with the Milwaukee Bucks – who made his first overall pick in the 2005 draft – the 7ft centre moved to the Golden State Warriors in 2012. The first Australian to ever be drafted number one, Bogut made a career high 32 points in a match against Dallas in January 2010.
The 2004 Australian Idol runner-up, Callea’s debut single ‘The Prayer’ is still the fastest-selling single by an Australian artist. Callea has already picked up an ARIA Music Award, Channel V Artist of the Year, Pop Republic Artist of the Year, MTV Viewers’ Choice Award, Variety’s Young Entertainer of the Year, MO Award and a Gospel Music Award during his career.
The punk rock star was born in Melbourne but raised in America. After fronting The Distillers throughout the 2000s, she now finds fame with Spinnerette, as well as making numerous guest appearances with other artists.
Initially a child star, Stasey got her big breakthrough on Melbourne soap opera Neighbours, where she played Rachel Kinski. Her on-screen presence alerted film-makers, and she made her big screen debut as the star of 2010’s Tomorrow, when the War Began, which received huge critical acclaim.
Emilie de Ravin– actress
Of French ancestry, De Ravin’s film credits include The Hills Have Eyes, Public Enemies and Remember Me. She shot to prominence with roles on the small screen though, appearing as Tess Harding on Roswell and Claire Littleton on Lost.
Also a singer and fashion model, Browning won the AFI International Award for Best Actress following her role as Violet Baudelaire in the 2004 film Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. Now 23, she continues to appear in several Hollywood productions.
Eve Morey – actress
After a cameo role in Home and Away, Morey joined Neighbours as Sonya Mitchell in 2009, and continues to be a prominent cast member.
Another Melburnian who found Neighbours as an ideal route to stardom, Valance used the popularity (and male attention) she gained from her role as Felicity Scully to launch a successful pop career. Last seen on the British TV series Strictly Come Dancing, she remains a popular television personality.
Jesse Spencer – actor
Having started out as Billy Kennedy in Neighbours, Spencer gained even greater exposure as Dr Robert Chase in the popular medical drama House, and is soon to be seen in TV series Chicago Fire, which is soon to premiere in the US.
Jordy Lucas – actress
Twenty-year-old Lucas has quickly become one of the show’s most important actresses since joining Neighbours to play the role of Summer Hoyland in 2010.
After eight years at the Dallas Cowboys, double Pro Bowl and All-Pro punter McBriar is searching for a new team. A punting average of 45.4 means that he still has a lot to offer anyone willing to take him on.
Missy Higgins – singer/songwriter
With four singles in the Top Ten, Higgins has quickly found fame as one of Australia’s favourite singer-songwriters. Able to play the guitar, piano, synthesiser, melodica and xylophone, her forthcoming third studio album The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle – released at the time of writing – is expected to be a huge hit.
With a CV which includes details of being a global wealth strategist, entrepreneur, international speaker, civilian astronaut, high-adrenaline adventurer and best-selling author, there isn’t much that Halik can’t do. The multi-millionaire made his money in property and the stock market in his late twenties, and has done as much as he can to enjoy his fortune ever since.
Travis Blackley – pitcher for Oakland Athletics
A leftie, Blackley has pitched in Korea for the Kia Tigers, but joined the Oakland A’s in 2012. He represented Australia in the 2007 Baseball World Cup and the 2009 World Baseball Classic.
After signing a first recording contract at the age of 16, Amorosi has sold over two million combined album and single sales worldwide. Nominated for many awards, her forthcoming album V is expected to rise rapidly up the charts.
