30 most influential people from Melbourne

As the capital and biggest city in the Australian state of Victoria, Melbourne has a vast population of over four million people.

The birthplace of the Australian film and television industries, it is also the centre of Australian rules football, a sport which continues to be fiercely supported throughout the country but hasn’t had much influence elsewhere.

Contact Rupert MurdochOne man who certainly has had that is the media mogul Rupert Murdoch, who was born in Melbourne in 1931. Murdoch – despite recent troubles – remains one of the most powerful and richest men in the world, with his influence stretching far beyond his native Australia.

Melbourne is well-known for producing vast amounts of entertainers, with the pop star Kylie Minogue, her sister Dannii, Kylie’s former Neighbours co-star Jason Donovan, a star of stage and screen, and other former Neighbours stars Holly Valance, these days a pop star, Caitlin Stasey, now a film actress and Jesse Spencer, who went on to star in the hit US show House, all coming from the city.

Contact Cate BlanchettThe Oscar-winning acting duo of Geoffrey Rush and Cate Blanchett also call Melbourne home, as do Hollywood starsOlivia Newton-John,Guy Pearce, Rachel Griffiths, Emily Browning and Eric Bana, the latter of whom gained worldwide fame for his portrayal of Mark ‘Chopper’ Read, who wrote a series of hugely successful semi-autobiographical crime novels.

Successful Melburnians even pop up where you least expect them, with Red Hot Chilli Peppers bassist Flea and AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd both hailing from the city, as do the ‘Dame Edna Everage’ star Barry Humphries and the feminist writer Germaine Greer. Influential musician Nick Cave comes from Melbourne, as does current star Vanessa Amorosi.

Shane WarneThe leading sports star from the area is undoubtedly Shane Warne, the cricketer from just outside of Melbourne who is widely regarded as the finest spin bowler to ever play the game.

Other Melbourne sporting stars include the tennis players Mark Philippoussis and Pat Cash, footballer Mark Viduka, cricket icons Bill Lawry and Merv Hughes, world champion swimmer Matt Welsh and Travis Blackley, a starting pitcher for the San Francisco Giants. Footballer Harry Kewell, although from Sydney, currently plays for the Melbourne Victory club.
